Family Chain

Family Chain explores the themes of grief, memory, and honoring through portraiture, focusing on transforming family photo archives into paintings that honor my aunt. Revisiting intimate snapshots of her life, I strive to bridge a connection between the living and the deceased, exploring how memories and the afterlife intersect. Through these paintings, I aim to use the colour blue to reflect upon the evolution of memories, while capturing the essence of familial and emotional connections. The inclusion of halos and the obituary card, ties back to religious and personal relationships, emphasizing the complex feelings of remembrance, reverence, and loss. Representing my unresolved grief serves as an expressive form and continuation of envisioning her spirit. This work serves as a personal journey and is a meditation on the role of portraiture and how it allows us to preserve memories of the ones we have lost.

We knew little that morning, God was going to call your name, In life we loved you dearly, In death we do the same, 24" x 30", acrylic on canvas, 2025

It broke our hearts to lose you, You did not go alone. For part of us went you, The day God called you home, 18" x 24", acrylic on canvas, 2025

You left us beautiful memories, Your love is still our guide. And though we cannot see you, You are always by our side, 24" x 30", acrylic on canvas, 2025

Our family chain is broken, And nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, The chain will link again, 24" x 30", acrylic on canvas, 2025
